The Kayanza region is located in northern Burundi, near the border with Rwanda. Here is the coffee washing station Nemba, where 3113 local coffee farmers, with an average of 150 coffee trees per family, leave their freshly picked coffee berries for fermentation and sorting. Here are the perfect conditions for growing exceptional coffee; high altitude (1800 meters), the red bourbon variety, volcanic soils and plenty of rain. After the farmers have left the freshly picked berries to Nemba, they are sorted, peeled and fermented for up to 12 hours. They are then washed in clean mountain water for 12 to 24 hours and then soaked once more - so-called double soak - before the coffee is dried on raised drying beds for two to three weeks. To the character, the coffee has a fresh taste of ripe berries, an apple fruity and a citrusy and exceptionally long well-developed aftertaste.
